The Beef Restaurant, with a forty-year history in Taoyuan, recently opened a new branch at the intersection of Hsin-yi and Tun-hwa this past August. The place is small but the menu is BIG, listing numerous stir-fry dishes flavored with popular Chinese spices - basil leaves, spring onions, black bean sauce, XO Barbecue Sauce and ginger root. Some dishes may be challenging to those not accustomed to animal intestines and other specialty meats, but these are essential ingredients in the local diet. Prices are quite reasonable, varying from NT$150-180 for small orders, and NT$180-300 for larger portions. If you want to try something really unusual, order the Cow Penis Chicken Stew (NT$2,000). This is a rare dish, and an advance request is recommended. --By Priscilla Chen
