If you've been in Taiwan since around 2000 and paying attention to the local music scene, the name Freya (林凡) should sound quite familiar. If you don't fall into this category, you may at least be able to hum a few bars of the hit ballad "Living Alone" (一個人生活), the song that catapulted singer Freya Lim's self-titled debut album to the top of the music charts and earned her a Golden Melody Best New Artist nomination in 2001.

When I first started working for ICRT in early 2001, I knew of Freya because she had been invited to perform at one of the station's events, but I never got to meet her or listen to her music. Many years later, we became friends. Once at a KTV outing, the song "Living Alone" came on and I said, "I love this song!", to which Freya smiled and replied, "Thank you." A definite "A-ha!" moment for me.
Born and raised in Taiwan, Freya attended almost every international school you can name on the island, including Dominican School, Morrison Academy's Taipei Bethany and Taichung campuses, and Taipei American School. After high school, she moved to America for college, and returned to Taiwan afterwards to focus on her music career. She credits her youngest aunt, who used to be a pop singer herself, for triggering her interest in music. While the first album she ever bought was Madonna's "True Blue," it is Cantonese singer Sandy Lam (林憶蓮) that Freya aspired to become as a performer: To have that sexy and sultry element in her singing, but always with class, grace and elegance.

After the success of her debut album, Freya followed up with a second album that garnered a Best New Artist award from Singapore's Golden Melody Awards in 2001. She released a number of singles between 2003 and 2006, and released her first English album of cover songs in 2007. After that, Freya went back to the States for grad school, and returned to Taiwan in 2009, releasing another album in 2010. It's safe to say that Freya Lim is not one to waste her time and, with her enormous talent, it's not hard to see why.

Freya's fourth and latest album, "Tears Flow Back" (眼淚流回去), features both the theme and ending songs for the highly rated Taiwan TV drama, "The Fierce Wife" (犀利人妻), one of which (重傷) earned her a Golden Melody Best Female Artist nomination for 2011. She is currently recording songs for her fifth album, to be released next year, and she also hosts a radio show from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
