Queen
is recognized as one of the most popular bands of the
20th Century. In 1972, they established themselves in
the glam rock genre, basing their band in England and,
later on, adding a bassist to their team. Their lead
singer Freddie Mercury's unique brand of charisma made
him the soul of glam rock. Wearing dramatic velvet costumes
on stage, Freddie Mercury captured every single audience
member's heart. When he passed away in 1991 of AIDS,
the music industry lost a lot of luster. In 1992, an
extravagant charity benefit concert was held in Freddie
Mercury's tribute. Allegedly this concert attracted
more than 70,000 people and this was just a conservative
estimate; it may have been the highest turnout in history.
Performers included Lisa Minneli, Elton John, David
Bowie, George Michael and Paul Young. The performance
by Guns 'N Roses also created quite a scene. Originally
released in a CD album version, it was later re-released
in 2002 in DVD format, recapturing the fantastic concert
held on a 370 foot wide by 90 foot high giant stage,
and was transmitted to over 76 countries around the
world. This is a definite addition to the collection
of all die-hard fans.
