California.
Sunshine, beaches, cruising with the top down. The radio
playing the classic SoCal sounds of the Beach Boys to
The Byrds to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young to The
Eagles to Fleetwood Mac. You get all this in The Thrills
debut "So Much For The City." Well, all except
the sunshine, beaches and convertible. The music is all
there. The music is all tight harmonies, jingle-jangle
guitars, big airy production with country music touches
of pedal steel guitar and banjo. Not a penny whistle
to be heard. Then there are the song titles: "Big
Sur," "Santa Cruz (You're Not That Far Away)," "Hollywood
Kids," and others. This is so California--so we
were shocked to find out that The Thrills are from Dublin
Ireland. It figures. Just like Neil Young (Canada), Mick
Fleetwood (UK), The Byrds' Roger McGuinn (Chicago), The
Eagles' Glen Frey (Detroit), the Thrills were drawn to
California by the music and myths, absorbed them and
to produce their own personal soundtrack for the Golden
State. |
