This
can be called the "2003 Best Album by a former Hawaiian
surfing pro." The more we listen, the more we like
it; the more people we turn on to this gem, the more
happy our world becomes. Yet, it is really hard trying
to explain why. Johnson plays the kind of music you would
expect from a surfer with his guitar at the beach just
after sunset: laid-back, acoustic guitar led pop that
blends a little reggae and a bit of white-guy rapping/singing.
Jack has fantastic songwriting chops and his rhythm section
finds the grooves to propel these 16 (shortish) songs.
But these are no obvious "cheeseburger in Paradise" type
beach ditties. While we have only a vague idea what he's
going on about in "Rodeo Clown" or "The
Horizon Has Been Defeated," we are compelled to
sing along anyway. Jack paints with vivid words, creating
a strikingly detailed scene that gives us the room to
complete the story. Beach music for the brain. |
