Set in a magical and fanciful land, every child is given a magical gift at birth. The beautiful Ella (Anne Hathaway) received the "gift" of obedience, making Ella do whatever she is told. When Ella's mother passes away, she becomes the responsibility of her thoughtless father, who later remarries. The stepmother is, of course, wicked, and the story follows Ella's attempts to break the spell.
