A fresh take on a tired genre in The Core

By Nancy Tu
Translated by Yvonne Chen (³¯¨|ªÚ)

¡@¡@The save-the-Earth type of movies is one of the Hollywood studios¡¦ favorite genres; after all, the future is unpredictable, rules are irrelevant, and the settings and props are just about enough to pacify people¡¦s imaginations. However, audiences are not fools. After a while, these films all seem so familiar, down to the noble ¡§sacrifice one person to save the world¡¨ gestures, as seen in ¡§Armageddon¡¨ and ¡§Deep Impact¡¨. Personal sacrifice is essential for the survival of mankind, and for hopes of getting more people into movie theaters.

¡@¡@This is one of those films, science fiction with all the makings of a typical Hollywood ¡§end of the world¡¨ disaster movie: heroes, romance, suspense, ingenuity and special effects. Only this time, the shuttle filled with brave souls heads, not to outer space, but deep down into Earth¡¦s core.

¡@¡@This movie is loaded with special effects and shows off advanced technologies for the future. With a ground-piercing laser and odd-shaped drill shuttle (plausible or not), an encounter with the green crystal ground bubble and giant diamond sediment layer, a peppering of periodic jokes, and a final nuclear explosion blast, ¡§The Core¡¨ is full of fresh and exciting scenes.

¡@¡@If you are planning on watching this movie, a final suggestion is don¡¦t expect too much and definitely see it on the big screen, or you will miss some fine moments. It is a nice popcorn movie if you are just looking for something to do on the weekends.
