¡@¡@Those who get
their history lessons from movies will already be familiar with
the name "Enigma". It was popularized by the movie "U-571",
in which a group of American sailors seize a Nazi submarine, and
with it an Enigma code machine. Once the Allies had the machine,
they struggled to break the codes it contained and decipher Nazi
messages.
¡@¡@This
movie, "Enigma", deals with the code-breaking work
done at Bletchley Park, north of London. Summoned back from
a stress-induced leave, Tom Jericho (Dougray Scott) is the
hero assigned the job of cracking the code.
¡@¡@In the
movie there is more of an emphasis on the code breakers, as
opposed to code breaking. When you consider the perilous circumstances
and outcomes of the work being done in the movie, the intensity
and suspense rises to a feverish level.

¡@¡@Of course, love
gets in the way. Claire Romilly (Saffron Burrows) was the cause
of Jericho's previous breakdown and now she is once again invading
every breath of his work. Romilly is sexy, dangerous, sly and elusive.
To offset Romilly, Hester Wallace (Kate Winslet) is the other woman
in Jericho's life. Jericho and Hester have their suspicions about
Claire, who might be passing secrets to the Germans.

¡@¡@What all
this amounts to is an intriguing set of relationships that provide
an excellent backdrop for a movie. The acting is very credible,
the setting exciting and romantic. How it all plays out is up
to you to find out.
