"What has
been your most interesting taxi ride in Taiwan?"
|
 |
I had a mid-morning meeting in Hong
Kong, a noon flight and a 3p.m. meeting in Hsinchu. My plane
was late and I told the taxi driver to go as fast as he could.
My mistake as he did as was asked. As we flew down the highway,
he prodded me with questions about my life in Taiwan; while
in reality, my life was literally flashing before my eyes.

I got into a taxi once and wanted to go to the train station.
The taxi driver was talking on the two-way radio with his
friend and he forgot where I wanted to go. We drove around
for a long time.

My roommate and
I were in a taxi, complaining that the driver probably didn't
understand us and was driving in circles. Suddenly in perfect
English he said, "You two want to go to Carrefour, right?
I know exactly where you are going." Needless to say
we were both surprised and embarrassed.

Once in Hualien,
a friend and I were waiting forever for a taxi to show up
so we could go to a hotel. Just as we had practically given
up, a taxi showed up, but had another passenger. The taxi
driver insisted we get in and took us to the hotel and then
wouldn't accept any money from us.

On first arriving
in Taiwan, I went to the tourist bureau in the airport. I
thought I was going to get a normal yellow taxi but instead
ended up with a Mercedes Benz.
