138, DaCheng St, North Dist
Hours: 1 pm-12 am

While Modism Cafe isn't new (see May, 2016 "Tea & Coffee" article), owner Yu-ming Chiang just expanded across the street, personally rebuilding and renovating a semi-abandoned Japanese colonial era wood-working shop. This wonderfully eccentric, cozy place only has seating for about 10, with a small bar and old chairs in the front and back as well as a tiny, open-air garden in the back. The wooden-floored interior is decorated with dried plants, old wine bottles, books, vintage appliances and even a Vespa scooter. Yu-ming and his staff use this space as a kitchen for making Modism Cafe's savory baked desserts, quiche and bread, as well as as a private space for his regular customers or those who want to specially reserve it. Besides coffees made from Yu-ming's hand-roasted beans, desserts include newer items like various tarts and the pictured Scone sampler (NT$120), featuring Matcha, Chocolate, Royal Blend Black Tea, and Cheese flavors. --By Douglas Habecker, translated by Anna Yang
