With the opening of this weekend street market, Taichung joins other international cities around the world with similar destinations for purchasing handicrafts, art and other creative knickknacks that are almost all hand made, decorated and/or painted. A joint cooperation between the DaLong Road Retailers Management Committee, Taichung City Government and Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Taichung Dalong Creative Market gives residents and tourists the chance to browse through a broad range of items, including exotic foreign jewelry, postcards, bags, potted plants, stuffed animals, hand-designed hats, Chinese handicrafts, puppets, clothing, shoes, keychains, and piggy banks. Conveniently, the market is located at one end of Taichung's already well-known JingMing 1st Street (also known as "tea street") in the heart of the "Little Europe" district. --By Douglas Habecker, translated by Naomi Lai
A. Each Saturday and Sunday (with the exception of the first week of the month), a block-long stretch of DaLong Road is sealed off for the market, which features 20-plus vendors selling all kinds of mostly-handmade creative items from local artists, craftspeople, studios and shops.
B. One unique facet of the Dalong Creative Market is the two-sided, barrel-shaped vendor booths, which were custom designed and made for this market. Vendors occupy these for three months at a time and individuals (including foreign residents) and businesses can contact the above information numbers for more details about getting a booth.
C. A small stage at one end of the market hosts regular musical performances and other events. Organizers also say that buskers--street performers and musicians--are being welcomed to the market and can call the information numbers for more details.
