It might seem kind of funny to see any type of ostrich farm here in Taichung but, lo and behold, there is one located right on LiMing Road. The owner of this feedlot, Mr.Chang, claims he started out in the bird business simply because he wanted his grandchildren to have playmates. Later on, he realized that he could really make "ostrich-ing" into a business; now he has about 10 breeds of the flightless birds that he feeds with natural corn and grains. At Qiao Guang, you can purchase your own bird to breed, but don't look too hungrily at them—they are not for eating! Mr. Chang recommends calling ahead if you want an ostrich—hatchlings can't be taken home until they are at least one month old. Depending on the bird's size, prices range from NT$2,500 to NT$3,500. Fresh and nutritious ostrich eggs are also available for purchase (about NT$500/egg). For NT$200 a day, you can also try out the fishing pond next to the farm.
