Fans
of military history and hardware will not want to miss this recently-completed
public park, located in a quiet corner of the Peitun District, not
far from the intersection of Chungteh Road, section 3, and Changping
Road. The park commemorates the ROC military¼)s victory during the
1958 Battle of Kinmen, which began on August 23, 1958 with a massive
bombardment and blockade of Kinmen Island by Chinese Communist forces.
In one of the heaviest artillery bombardments in modern history,
Chicom forces fired over 500,000 shells at the small island in a
44-day period. However, ROC return counter-battery fire destroyed
97 Communist artillery sites and 279 artillery pieces and sank 81
naval ships and gunboats. The ROC military also overcame an air
and sea blockade, successfully re-supplying and reinforcing the
island throughout the siege. To mark this victory, a variety of
US-made Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines equipment is displayed
in the park, including Lockheed F-104G Starfighter and Northrop
F-5E fighter jets, M-24 and M-41 tanks, an LVT amphibious personnel
carrier, M-108 self-propelled artillery piece, and a naval twin
5-inch gun turret. At the center of the park is a white obelisk
with Chinese and English explanations, plus a statue of Chiang Kai-shek.
Heading north on Chungteh Road, turn right onto Chungteh 10th Road,
section 1 at the six-way intersection with Changping Road and go
about a block to the park.
