One of Taiwan's leading craft brewers, Taihu, has opened its first non-Taipei drinking spot in a charming old government housing complex renovated by the Fantasy Group as the "Green Ray Project". Rough red-brick walls and pillars, a floor surfaced with 8,000 wooden tiles, and dim warm lighting creates a cozy ambiance. Customers can sit at an attractive L-shaped bar or wooden tables but this is designed as a "standing bar" with a spacious open area inside and small outdoor beer garden. Behind the bar are taps for 20 craft beers (NT$200-250 330 ml), generally 15 creative brews from Taihu and five mostly-American imports like Sierra Nevada, Stone, and Ballast Point. "Chuoyinshi" roughly means "sipping house"; Taihu considers its stores beer "showrooms" and staff members--who all have obtained Level 1 Cicerone Beer Certification--are happy to help customers learn about and savor craft beers. Food is limited to a tasty Charcuterie Plate (NT$350) with eight meat selections. --By Douglas Habecker, translated by Anna Yang
