Taichung's lively night market scene has gotten a big boost with this new Nantun district night market, being touted as the largest in the city with a claimed 1,500 "pings" (approx. 4,960 square meters) of space and 250 vendors. Food items include plenty of famous local snacks, such as stinky tofu, oyster omelets, double-layer sausage rolls, little "takoyaki" octopus dumplings, and crispy fried squid bigger than your face--a delicious item that attracts long lines at the Furen University Anger Giant Squid (NT$100) vendor. These giant squid are fried with dough and mixed with mustard, garlic or seaweed seasonings for more flavor. --By Cheryl Huang, translated by Angela Cheng
