Coming into its 12th anniversary, 89K is still a happening nightspot for music lovers and bar goers in Taichung. From their humble beginnings in the Fengchia area, they moved to HuaMei's Canal District, then to ZhongMing South Road and, finally, to DaGuan Road, near the other big names in Taichung nightclubs. This orange establishment is hard to miss from the outside and more spacious than previous locations on the inside. They now have a long bar, dining and seating areas, a stage and a games/activities area on the second floor. Its high-ceilinged design allows visitors to get a clearer view of the huge projector screen on the wall, as well as live performances on the stage.
Although more spacious on the inside, 89K still maintains its rugged American-Indian ambiance. Displays of patterned cloths, bulls' skulls, cowhides, quirky Southwestern flair, and a collection of international flags festoon the walls. Much of the artwork is made by local celebrity Joseph, the owner. However, like everyone else, you can call him by his self-appointed title, "Chief".
If you are a fan of '80s rock and blues, then 89K is where you need to hitch your wagon. The Chief is also a heavy-duty motorcycle enthusiast (mostly Harleys, of course) and is often seen traipsing around in leathers and chaps--a regular urban cowboy. He is also one of the board members of a motorcycle club in Central Taiwan and holds regular gatherings at the bar.
On Fridays and Saturdays, 89K usually hosts live music groups. On these nights, the bar is usually pretty full of people nodding their heads to the beats of mostly-foreign bands who perform around the island. The cover includes a free beer (though some selections require an extra NT$20-40). From Sunday to Thursday, there's no minimum charge and the stage is open for bands to rehearse on. If you are a fan of live/independent music, classic Americana, or just getting together with friends, then 89K is the right place for you.
