A long-standing pillar of Taichung's nightlife scene, 89K has been in business for almost seven years. This distinctive, down-to-earth place has now moved—for the third time in its history—from its original location along the Hua Mei Canal to an ideal new setting on Jung Ming South Road that is about four times larger than before. In addition to a long bar, there is more seating now, including a separate bar/seating area in the middle of the room, perfect for watching the big projection-screen cable TV broadcasts (mostly sports). 89K continues with its American Indian decorative theme which includes cow skulls, patterned cloths and related items, and the music is still good, classic rock 'n' roll. Owner Joseph, who resembles a Native American, right down to the buckskin jacket, did all of the decorating himself and says that a basement pool table will also be added at some point in the future. Drinks remain the same as before, with beers going for NT$100/small bottle and NT$150/large and cocktails starting from NT$150. The house specialty is the sweet and tasty Nantou county Bunung Aborigine millet wine ("shao mi jiou") which sells for NT$100/glass or NT$600/bottle, and is also mixed with red wine in a shot glass (NT$150) or bottle for a uniquely-good concoction. 89K is located opposite Liquid Lounge about half-way between Taichunggang and Gungyi roads. – By Douglas Habecker, translated by Annie Liu
