If
you are like me, you may have passed Concession several times
and, from its interesting old Chinese-style exterior, wondered
what was inside. One day, I decided to find out.
| As
I opened the heavy wooden doors, I entered into a spacious area
with vaulted ceilings, brick walls and even a brick bar. Several
black and white paintings hung on the wall. To the right were
rustic tables and chairs, adding to the air of antiquity. The
dining/stage area offered a place to enjoy a delicious meal
while listening to live music. There were also games of darts
or pool in the games area. |

As I sat at
a table in the corner, watching the faces of the people as they
listened to the music, it struck me that not many pubs provide this
level of comfort and relaxation. The manager of Concession described
this place as a jazz bar, decorated in the style of 1950s Shanghai.
To complete the illusion, the servers wear traditional Chinese dresses,
otherwise known as chipao. There are five different music performances
nightly, including jazz, English oldies, Mandarin and Taiwanese
oldies, violin and acoustic guitar performance and an "Open
Mike" time with piano accompaniment. On Thursday and Saturday
nights, there are special performances.

The
food and drink menus are extensive. One of its most popular
food items is the stinky tofu [¯ä¨§»G]
(NT$120), which was originally a Shanghainese dish. As far as
cocktails, the specialty is Fire Garden [¤õ¿N¶é©ú¶é]
(NT$350), a mix of eight strong liquors and juice that is ignited
to create a flame. It is very colorful--blue on top and yellow
on the bottom. According to the manager, it is delicious, but
meant only for those who can hold their liquor well. |
There are Happy
Hour specials nightly before 9 p.m., with two-for-one specials on
all drinks priced under NT$250.The next time you pass Concession,
take the time to go in and check it out. You'll find that it is
a comfortable pub to sit, relax and listen to music while you let
go of the cares of the day and look forward to a brand new tomorrow.
