Taichung Bars and Pubs - O'Changs Irish Pub by courtney donovan smith

Occasionally, something comes along and catches one off guard.  An Irish pub with a clever name in my own neighbourhood is certainly one.  All dark wood, green paint, shamrocks to left and right, fiddles over the speakers, cutesy pictures of long-gone Irish poverty and knick-knacks all round.  Just like any Irish pub from Houston to Hanover to Hong Kong.

And like all those Irish pubs, it is a most pleasant place to kick back and have a few pints with the lads.  Sadly, there is no Guinness on tap, but there are tall cans of Guinness draught for NT$180 and Miller on tap.  All beers range from NT$100 to NT$180.   Mixed drinks are NT$160-NT$280.  Unlike most Irish pubs, there is an assortment of Taiwanese teas available.

The clientele is mixed, covering all ages and including a sizeable minority of foreigners.  Located near the shoe colony at Hong Tai and Tung Hai University, it is close to two centers of foreign activity and this place will draw them in like a magnet and deposit them in their comfortable booths or glue them to the bar.

Overall, O'Chang's a good place to check out.  The décor is nice, the food good and the service excellent.  Tell us what you think.

GETTING THERE: O'Chang's resides in the Sun Mall on Yung Fu Rd. between Taichung Harbour Rd. (Taijungang Rd.) and Shituen Rd. (Hsitun Rd.).  If coming from downtown, go up Harbour Rd. past the freeway, turn right at Yung Fu Rd. and continue down until you reach the block with a Geant Store, a MacDonalds a Blockbuster Video and a KFC.  It is located on the pedestrian mall between the MacDonalds and the KFC.
