Smokey Joe's (Art Museum branch)

(04) 2375-3990
7, MeiChuan W Rd, Sec 1, West Dist
Hours: 11 am-10 pm

Smokey Joe's second Taichung branch is a big stand-alone building near the WuQuan West/YingCai roads intersection. Visitors are greeted by a Chevy pick-up truck cashier's counter, next to a giant pachinko game customers play for promotional coupons. Every nook and cranny of the 500-square-meter interior is decorated with hundreds of American-style knickknacks and items--vintage signs, model airplanes, deer antlers, cowboy hats, old gas pumps--surrounding a central bar and various dining areas with all manner of tables and chairs, from booths to two-person barrel tables, plus outdoor seating in a cozy back garden. Besides a mix of tasty Smokey Joe's favorites like Tex-Mex standards, ribs, salads, pasta, burgers and pizza, there are all-new menu additions, notably a full spread of Sichuan-style entrees, from Mapo Tofu (NT$180) to Crispy Dry Kung Pao Chicken (NT$280), and other Thai, Vietnamese and Singaporean options. Among many drinks here are five margaritas and six beers/ciders and Jim Beam highballs on tap. --By Douglas Habecker, translated by Anna Yang
