One of the most interesting foreign restaurants to come along in a while, Retski's Kitchen completely immerses diners in a Belarussian setting, complete with a storybook-like wooden villa, costumed waiters, Belarussian music and hearty Belarussian and Western cuisine. Hailing from near the Belarussian capital of Minsk, owner/chef Valery Retski and his Taiwanese wife Angel have also run a similar restaurant in Taichung county's Fongyuan city (57, DaShe St; tel. 04-2515-2581) for two years. Besides food, there's a big drink selection, from coffees to wines, cocktails and beers. --By Douglas Habecker, translated by Naomi Lai
A. Very filling lunch/dinner set meals include the choice of a main course, with authentic Belarussian options like the pictured Shashlyk BBQ Pork (NT$480)--two sizzling big metal skewers loaded with big juicy chunks of meat, peppers, onions and tomatoes--as well as the Kotleta Meat Balls (NT$450). Other courses include Garlic Flavored Grilled Ribeye (NT$630) and Roast Fishsteak with Dill Cream Sauce (NT$420). All come with a daily-changing appetizer, soup, salad and dessert, plus apertif, Russian Black Bread and drink option, including Kvass--a popular drink in Slavic countries made from black bread and honey.
B. Retski's amazing interior resembles a Belarussian wooden summer house within a house, with a central wooden lattice-covered area resembling a garden seating area. The meticulous decor includes dozens of Belarussian decorations, handicrafts, photographs and other knickknacks.
C. Chocolate lovers won't want to miss the Chocolate with Deadoshika's Honey drink, served with a tiny pitcher of honey and a dark-chocolate spoon--good for stirring and eating! The restaurant also hand-makes and sells a variety of 70% dark chocolates, sold under its own "Liza" brand.
