Deluxe Brew House

This attractive brewery restaurant is big new addition to Taichung's growing craft-brewed beer market, and offers four main kinds of beers, freshly-made at Deluxe's brewery in Tucheng, Taipei county. The first Asian company to receive Germany's reputable Doemens training/certification and Taiwan's largest provider of microbrewed beer, Deluxe has been around since 2003. However, this Taichung outlet is by far its largest venture. From its taps patrons can sample either a Weissbier, Gold Pils Beer, dark Dunkel Beer, or a seasonally-changing beer--right now an 8% alcohol German-style Festbier. The ladies will also especially enjoy the "Cocktail Beers"--with added orange, kiwi, strawberry or apple flavors--resembling Belgian fruit beers. Even teetotalers can enjoy a beer-like beverage, the non-alcoholic Malz. Beer is available in 300cc (NT$120-150), 500cc (NT$180-210) and one-liter glasses, or in 2,000cc giant glass tubes (NT$600-700). --By Douglas Habecker, translated by Naomi Lai
A. Deluxe's sizable menu focuses on Taiwanese fare but includes a variety of Thai and Western dishes. Pictured here is the popular Roasted Bavarian Pig Knuckle (NT$480), Caesar Salad Smoked Chicken (NT$220) and spicy, Hakka-style Stir-Fried Dry Squid with Celery and Dried Tofu (NT$160). Other items include Grilled US Choice Beef Short Ribs (NT$620), Thai-Style Seafood Salad (NT$260), Korean-Style Stir-Fried Beef with Kim Chi (NT$180), Stir-Fried Clams with Garlic and Basil, appetizers like Buffalo Wings, pastas, and pizzas.
B. The spacious ambiance features brick walls, high ceilings, various tables and booths, and attractive decor, including slightly-modified vintage posters. A large upstairs is suitable for large private parties and there are first-floor and second-floor outdoor decks, perfect for Taichung's usually-warm weather.
C. The bar area is dominated by giant, gleaming brass beer-brewing equipment. Although this apparatus is not actually used, it reminds customers of Deluxe's microbrewing expertise.
