Soft velvety sofas in deep mauve, white gauze and beaded curtains separate you from the rest of the crowd at this place, as a dainty-looking fountain, garden scenery and the tinkling of soft music makes you think you've walked into an elegant Balinese-style bar. However, Matino is a restaurant that offers a great variety of cuisine; mouthwatering truffles, seasonal caviar, fresh oysters, red wine, cheese and much more are on offer. They even have a cheese cart that provides tableside service, allowing you to dine like royalty. With French cuisine as its main fare, this establishment's food is designed to satisfy gourmets, ranging from the creation of the sauces for the Clams "Salmon" Venus Shell (NT$600), which is smooth like tiramisu, or the delectable Baked Snail with Garlic Butter. Afternoon teas are available for NT$220 per person and are served with cake, fruit bowl and handmade tea snacks, together with a choice of tea or coffee. --By Tammy Huang, translated by Cara Steenstra
