Hot pot restaurants are all the rage in Taichung. There are a variety of sizes available, from small single-person pots to large multi- person pots. Then there are dozens of soup bases to chose from: spicy, healthy, pickled vegetables, Southeast Asian style and many more that have been invented. Just looking at the choices is confusing enough, let alone deciding which one to try.

Tian Wai Tian attempts to please those who love hot pots by providing over 70 kinds of seasonal vegetables, seafood, chicken, beef, pork and mutton. The restaurant has an "all you can eat" policy, but they do not skimp on the ingredients at all, including good-quality items such as prawns, beef tendons, beef brisket, offal, crabs, oysters and clams. Its fresh ingredients and variety in selection certainly make it stand out from the average hot pot restaurant. Moreover, their NT$250 lunch and NT$350 dinner are both "all you can eat" buffet style, and there is no 10% service charge, either. There is a choice of soup bases, the spicy or the "Yuan Yang" (which contains both spicy and non spicy). For those who would like to try even more flavors, they have a "Benz" pot, where the pot is divided into three parts, with pickled vegetable, spicy and "sha cha" flavored soup base, all at no extra charge. The soup bases do not contain any artificial flavorings. Take the spicy soup base as an example: it takes an entire day to make, using over 10 kinds of Chinese medicinal herbs, tofu and ducks' blood. After a long period of cooking, the tofu and ducks' blood both melt in your mouth. Manger Miss Tang said that it takes time and effort to carefully choose good-quality ducks' blood, so that one can often taste the quality right away. Their pickled vegetables are also made with their own recipe, and has a very strong flavor. Even after we have replenished our soup base several times, the flavor continued to linger.

There is also an all-you-can-eat fruit and dessert bar accompanying the meal, with over 10 different flavors of Duroyal ice cream, home made jelly and even nostalgic ice-lollies all the way from Er Shui in Puli. These ice-lollies were often seen during the old days in Taiwan, and bring back lots of fond memories. The upstairs area seats up to 100 people; each round table seats eight to 10 people, the square tables seat four. These are suitable for family and company gatherings alike. The restaurant sells cold drinks, but feel free to bring your own drinks or alcohol at no extra charge.
