The Splendor
Taichung's newest restaurant is not your ordinary Japanese
eatery. Rather, this one-of-a-kind establishment introduces
Taichung to a hot foreign trend in Japanese/Western fusion
cuisine, best typified in places like the United States and
Australia by famous restaurants like Nobu. Chef Aijiro Shinoda
has worked in 26 countries and combines high-end Japanese
kaiseki cuisine with French, Italian and Chinese ingredients,
cooking styles and presentation to create dishes that mix
the best of East and West, that taste Japanese but look French.
Diners can order from an extensive a la carte menu, which
includes appetizers, salads, grilled dishes and main courses,
from the NT$470 Yakitori to the NT$400 Cutlet with Curry and
NT$1,200 Sukiyaki. Or try one of the three set-menu dinners
for NT$1,200, NT$2,000 and NT$2,400, respectively. These sets
include seven to eight courses, from Tokyo Etomae Nigiri Sushi
to Roasted Duck in Balsamic Sauce. There are much-cheaper
lunch sets in the NT$600 range, too. The spacious restaurant
is located on the 11th floor and is joined to another new
addition, the classy, next-door Montaigne Piano Bar (open
6 pm-1:30 am), which has plenty of drinks plus some dishes
from the restaurant. --By Douglas Habecker, translated by
