It's startling to see a pub packed out on a cold Wednesday night, but it was Chubby's Quiz Night, an event which attracts a growing number of trivia buffs to a beer-fuelled battle of wits.

Chubby's Restaurant & Bar opened last summer in a nicely laid-out white stucco-and-wood building that includes an outdoor patio. Since then, led by the same Simon Morton & Jada Chu team that owned The Riverside, it has carved out a strong place in the local pub and dining scene. One of the elements of this success is their activities and entertainment which, like Quiz Night, show creative flair. From their golf tournaments to hip hop dance shows, Chubby's often brings on the pleasantly unexpected.

Others come for the food, with the quality here clearly demonstrated by the large number of foreign diners at Chubby's each night. Simon notes that they pay particular attention to the quality of the beef they use, and indeed, the most popular dishes are all beef. Most popular are the Fillet Steak, with a red wine and pate sauce, and the Chubby Burgers, which Simon proclaims are "the best in Taichung". Regulars often order a dish not on the published menu--the Steak Sandwich. Another unique Canadian favorite are the dumpling-like Perogies.

If that weren't enough, diners can look forward to a greatly-expanded menu this month. Unveiled during a January 8 New Menu Launch Party (with 50% discounts) are 10 new curries (NT$200-250), three new pita sandwiches, a number of healthy baked potato meals, and some appetizers.

The bar offers up some surprises, too, including a full menu consisting entirely of shooters and a good selection of single malt whiskies. Of the cocktails, the Cosmopolitan (NT$160) is the house favorite, and draft and bottled beers start at NT$120.

A bit of fun, good food and good drinks, all in a pleasant environment at reasonable prices, is a good combination that will no doubt guarantee Chubby's success for some time to come.
