Safe sex might not seem like a normal theme for a dining establishment,
but that is exactly what Banana Restaurant is about. Condoms--glass,
neon-lit and otherwise--decorate the interior and guests are welcome
to help themselves to free prophylactics. In fact, Banana is the
first restaurant to officially partner with Taiwan's Center of Disease
Control for safe sex, anti-AIDS promotions. The establishment itself
is a classy-looking place with lots of dark wood decor. The menu
features a variety of Western dishes including seafood pasta (NT$220),
lamb chops (NT$480), and New Zealand sirloin (NT$380). Of note are
two special set meals whose names are Chinese poetic references
to the male and female reproductive organs and--the management claims--supposed
to boost libidos. Dining hours are 11:30 am to 2 pm and 5 pm to
8:30 pm. There are also many coffees, teas, juices and alcoholic
beverages. From 9 pm to 2 am, a piano features music and--not surprisingly--condom
jokes and question-and-answer contests. Banana is located opposite
La Cite fashion outlet mall.
