This classy-looking restaurant helps introduce Taichung diners
to yet another variation on the popular hot pot theme. Featuring
Hong Kong-style hot pot, Cheng Teh Hsin provides built-in table
cooking stations, divided into two halves for two different types
of cooking broths, one mild and other with a stronger, Southeast
Asian satay flavor. Unlike conventional hot pot places which simply
start with boiling water, these stews are brewed for hours and prepared
with all kinds of medicinal herbs and spices. The other cooking
items (red meats, seafood, vegetables, tofu, etc.) are similar to
elsewhere and may be ordered off the menu individually or through
set-menu group specials (for two to six people, averaging NT$400/500
per person) or 'business meals', available all hours of the day
and costing between NT$220 and NT$340 per person. The restaurant
is located in a basement resembling a fancy wine cellar--on Ying
Tsai Road opposite the SoftChina software store at the Kung Yi/Ying
Tsai intersection--and serves food until 4 a.m.
