Natural Wine - Wine Nature

By Morris Tao
Translated by S. Ying

In 1924, Austrian scholar Rudolf Steiner observed that the main cause of reduced crop quality was environmental pollution and over-exploitation of the land. Therefore, he advocated that farming be free of normal human intervention, with fruit and vegetable crops growing and thriving naturally through his proposed biodynamic method of cultivation under the following principles: a) relying on natural and self-sufficient means for power sources; b) following the laws and rhythms of nature; c) independent ecological systems.

Natural Wine - Wine NatureIn recent years, European and American wineries have also started following the new trend of natural wine-making in order to obtain organic certification, reduce carbon emissions and pollution, and prevent environmental damage. This even includes the use of animals to assist with farming rather than machinery and diesel engines.

"Agriculture Biologique" (AB) is an important certification given by the French Ministry of Industry and Commerce and a very credible certification for food and beverages. All businesses whose products receive the AB certification must ensure that all raw ingredients are 100% sourced from organic farms and maintain high safety standards during the entire process, from production to packaging and shipping to ensure all environmental guidelines are followed. AB-certified products have received a BIO label from the EU since 2003 and are recognized globally by various countries.

Natural wines must start with grape cultivation because this is related to the region, climate and grounds where grapes are grown. All these factors will affect wine making and flavors. In order to produce natural wines, no pesticides, fertilizers or chemicals may be used. Instead, animal manure is mixed with natural plant fertilizers. The fermentation process also does not use any artificial yeasts or chemicals such as sulfur dioxide. Such environmentally and ecologically friendly methods produce excellent, flavor-filled wines, most which come from the French regions of Vallee de la loire and Languedoc-Roussillon.

Natural Wine - Wine NatureIn the future, as you savor the natural and full flavors of these wines, take the time to think about their source and the benefits of naturally cultivating grapes and other crops.
