Finding a suit that fits

For men, finding a suit that fits their personal body type can be a daunting experience. Besides the cost, there is the challenge of finding the right tailor and knowing what questions to ask. For some handy tips regarding the whole process, this writer visited Guo Bin Advanced Suit, a well-established Taichung tailor.

Left: Being measured and fitted
Right: Style and fabric selection
1) Initial consultation with the tailor
‧Budget: Know your budget beforehand. There are two ways to buy a suit. The best option is custom-made; for this option, expect to pay a premium as these suits are made from scratch for the most precise fit. The more affordable made-to-measure suit uses an existing pattern to accommodate the customer's measurements and preferences. The cheapest, most convenient, but potentially more risky, option is a ready-made suit, which may need only minor adjustments. Tailors can also provide alteration services.
‧Suit purpose: A tailor will ask you how often you plan on wearing the suit and whether it's for work or a special occasion like a wedding.
‧Style options: If you already have a style in mind, or have seen your favorite star wearing something you like, don't be afraid to bring a photo. Tailors will also have books showing a wide range of style options, as well as a range of suits in the shop to try on and give you a visual idea.
‧Fabric selection: This will determine how your suit will look and feel as well as how it will perform and last over time. Considerations include the climate, occasion and budget. Many blends of materials and basic natural materials like cotton or wool offer a good mix of performance and value. Other fabrics, like cashmere and silk, are extremely luxurious but expensive.
‧Customization options: After choosing the style and cloth, it's time to start customizing all the options available, including buttons, pocket style, vent options, trouser pleats, cuffs, interior linings and much more.

2) Taking measurements: Many measurements are taken in great detail to take into account your posture and figuration, and to create a sample.
3) Further fittings: The customer will be asked to return 3-7 days later to try on the sample. The tailor will then make any further adjustments as needed. In some cases, the customer will need multiple fittings before the final suit is ready. On average the whole process takes three weeks.
