On countless occasions, I have walked
or driven along Taichung Harbor Road at night and witnessed foreigners
walking down the sidewalk in one direction or another from their
hotels. Where are they headed? Or are they just looking for something
to do?
We all know from our own travel experiences the feeling of anticipation
and/or trepidation when exploring an unknown metropolis on our own.
As one of my friends recently commented, Taichung Harbor Road is
rapidly developing into the city's version of Hong Kong's famed
"Golden Mile," with more than its share of department stores, shops,
restaurants, pubs and other establishments. Therefore, for this
month's cover story, we will be providing a brief overview of this
area's night life for foreigners and Chinese, visitors and residents,
alike.
I am pleased to note that COMPASS listings continue to grow in
this issue, with the addition of a new cultural events section --
to provide a heads-up about upcoming concerts, exhibitions and other
happenings -- plus listings of services, entertainment and more
shopping and dining additions. As always, we welcome you to give
us a call and let us know about any listings you want added, or
that need to be updated.
This month, don't miss other interesting and informative features,
including Nancy Miller's "Up Close" look at a dynamic Taichung couple,
Barbara Healy's "About Town" survey of Taichung dental care and
John Chislett's review of another fine city dining establishment.
As you can see, we have a variety of contributors represented in
this issue and I would like to thank them very much for their enthusiasm
and support of COMPASS.
Sincerely,
Douglas Habecker
