-- By Pieter Vorster Translated by Annie Liu
Overlooking the tranquil grounds of the Kaohsiung
Cultural Centre, La Chance Au Petit Bonheur (which loosely
translates as " A Little Lovely") is a charming
coffee shop and restaurant. Situated right next to a bookshop
and close to the Taiwan National Normal University, the owners
have created a place where customers can enjoy good food,
removed from the hustle and bustle around them. With minimalistic,
yet natural decor, the atmosphere is soothing and large windows
create the effect of loads of space.
La Chance has a fair-sized menu, including
breakfast and brunch (from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. only), "sweet
choices" (from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m.) and main courses available
throughout most of the day (from 11:30 a.m. - 10:30 p.m.).
The brunch special (NT$120) includes egg, Pork with Herb Sauce,
a mini salad, toast and a cup of America Coffee, which comes
highly recommended. They also offer a variety of hot pots,
including the Rosemary Tomato Hot Pot which is a real treat
at NT$199 (complete with seafood and pork). It is worth noting
that all of their curry dishes are made from imported products,
however, in this writer's opinion, the best offering at La
Chance is their smoothies. The Mango Smoothie (NT$80) is delicious
and filling and the Green Tea Smoothie promises to be something
unique. As a coffee shop, La Chance offers a variety of teas
and coffees from NT$60.
Group reservations are welcomed and La Chance
would be a wonderful venue to get together for a mid-day meeting.
The helpful staff make you feel right at home with fast and
friendly service. It is the ideal place to sit back, relax
and enjoy some time away from it all.
