Hidden in an alley close to the intersection
of JhongShan and JhongJheng Roads lies an import foods store
that you need to visit. Walking through the door, this writer
met Steve Hsu, the jolly owner of Box Store (also known as
'ABC Box Store'). Steve has been operating the Box Store for
25 years. Most of his products come from California, via a
distributor in Taipei. Although the store is small, there
are plenty of products on the shelves. Most of the foods are
Western "comfort" foods like Campbell's Chunky Soups,
Tuna Helper (NT$135) and Liverwurst (NT$165). Although you
can purchase some of these items at a wholesaler like Costco,
many people don't want to buy such large amounts of items
at once. Therefore, Steve offers smaller serving sizes of
foods like cheese, sour cream and meat. Other popular items
include the Couscous mixes (just add water), potato chips
and sausages. A variety of sodas, including A&W Root Beer,
Dr. Pepper and Crush are NT$30 each. Diet sodas are also available
for people who want a break from Diet Coke! Corona and Guinness
beers are also on hand.
