Last year, when a famous foreign doughnut chain opened its first Taiwan outlet in Taipei, the queue of customers stretched around the block, resulting in a great deal of media coverage. The arrival of Tian Jiu Fang in Kaohsiung has been much more low-key, but the doughnuts are good and inexpensive. The store is conveniently located a five minutes' walk from Kaohsiung Railway Station, and very close to what will eventually become a KMRT station. Doughnuts come in 22 different flavors, including sweet potato, peanut, red bean, cheese, curry, chocolate, sesame, and original taste. Prices range from NT$15 to NT$30 each. Unfortunately, there's nowhere here to sit down and eat, nor are any drinks sold. The majority of customers seem to be office workers buying bagfuls for their colleagues, or passers-by tempted by the appealing doughnuts on display. If you're placing an order worth more than NT$150, please call ahead to make sure that what you want is available.
