The growing number of marriages
between Taiwanese men and Vietnamese women has inevitably
resulted in the appearance of restaurants that serve up Vietnamese
home cooking. In the Kaohsiung area, one of the newest is
Quan An Viet Nam. Conveniently located near Nanzih Railway
Station, it has a menu listing Vietnamese staples, such as
Beef He-Fen Noodles, for between NT$20 and NT$70. This eatery
is covered over but open-fronted, clean but spartan. And,
as you might expect, it's become something of an unofficial
drop-in center for the local Vietnamese community, which includes
not only "foreign brides," but also many blue-collar
workers brought to Taiwan to work in the nearby industrial
zone. If you arrive in Nanzih by train, walk from the station
entrance to the nearest intersection, then turn right and
walk less than 100 meters: Quan An Viet Nam is on the right.
