Just as every part of Taiwan has its distinctive local cuisine, so every part of mainland China has its specialty dishes. Guilin, a small town in the southern part of the mainland famous throughout the world for its karst pinnacles and spires, is no exception. This new store, within walking distance of the Hanshin Department Store, offers a range of inexpensive Guilin dishes (NT$40 to NT$70), plus several side dishes of vegetables, peanuts, tofu, and other delicacies. As you would expect, the store is decorated with photos of Guilin's idyllic scenery. Information panels explain (in Chinese only) the special characteristics of Guilin cuisine. This clean, simple eatery should be good if you’re looking for something a little different to the usual rice-and-noodle fare. --By Steven Crook
