The Rhine Restaurant's
Continental Flavors
By Angelica Montgomery
Away
from the squawking demands of the working world is the Rhine's sedate
space of flowers, candles, incense, and glimmering lanterns. Dim
lights drip from a dark wood ceiling; hands touch at the quiet tables
in the shadows.
The
Rhine on Wufu 2nd Road, open for the past 15 years, is one
of Kaohsiung's few 24-hour restaurants. The soothing atmosphere
no doubt draws a soft sigh from many guests as they come in
after working late.
The
cuisine rotates between a daytime and a nighttime menu, and
is inspired by French, Italian and Japanese cooking. The wine,
however, comes exclusively from France.
Highlights
from the daytime menu (available from 6 am to 10 pm) include
Rack Of Lamb With Parsley And Garlic for NT$400 and Chicken
Frontierre-Style for NT$230. Into the night, diners nibble
on a number of stir fries and set meals for between NT$180
and NT$220 and noodles and soups for NT$200-280.

Parties
of 10 can enjoy a nine-course meal, including seafood, steak, salad,
and drink, for NT$6000. Groups of twenty can use the private room
on the second floor, while larger gatherings get full use of the
third floor, including plush couches and a karaoke machine.
The
first floor has a number of little shops, offering candles, pottery,
and fashions with an Indian flavor.
In
addition to the 24-hour establishment on Wufu 2nd Road, there are
two other Rhine restaurants in Kaohsiung, both of which keep more
conventional hours. See the listings on page 39 for details.
