After building a new family home just north of Tainan City, Carl--a South African--and his Taiwanese wife decided to turn the first floor into a family-friendly and tastefully-decorated spot for eating, drinking, and relaxing. "Friends and family loved coming around," explains Carl. So far, the favorite of the mostly Taiwanese clientele is the Spaghetti With Shrimps And Mushrooms (NT$210; NT$300 for a set including soup, drink, and dessert). Carl also serves six other kinds of spaghetti, two of which are vegetarian, cheesecake, apple crumble, milk tart, and a chocolate sundae inspired by his daughter. Shakespeare's currently opens on weekends only, but the owners plan to begin opening on some weekdays. Also, the restaurant will open specially for groups that have made reservations a few days in advance. To reach this place, take Taiwan Highway 17 north from Tainan toward Cigu, and turn right onto Road 173 as soon as you cross the Zengwun River into Tainan County. Zhuciao is the second village; Shakespeare's is on the left. Call if you have problems finding it.
