A spiritual experience in a spiritual atmosphere: that's how I would describe DiShuiFang, the teahouse located on the first floor of the Chiayi branch of Fokuangshan, a famous Buddhist organization whose headquarters are in Kaoshiung County. The organization runs more than a dozen teahouse-restaurants around Taiwan, all named DiShuiFang.

Great for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike, this place has a tranquil, soothing atmosphere, spiritual music playing in the background, and an environment so clean and spotless that you might think you're in Heaven.

Outside the window, a lighted waterfall adds to the serenity (the name of the teahouse means, roughly "place of dripping water"). The beauty of this place is best experienced at night. The food is appetizing, healthy, and also very inexpensive. Among the items listed on the menu are Vegetarian Beef Noodle Soup (NT$50), Curry Rice And Vegetables (NT$50), and Fried Rice Covered With Cheese (NT$50). Portions are large.

The food is not the only attraction. Next to the teahouse there is an attractive art gallery which makes for a great pre- or post-dinner stroll. Admission is free. Gift shops sell Buddhist books, music, and souvenirs. In the same building, art classes, dance classes, music classes, and an English-reading club are held. If interested, ask any member of staff for details. The top floor is a large auditorium where talent shows and other events are occasionally held.

The teahouse and art gallery make for a great refuge from the hustle and bustle of city life, and are conveniently close to the rear entrance of Chiayi Train Station. Just look for the Nanhua Education Hall, and you'll find yourself given a warm and sincere welcome.
