Chiayi residents looking for good Japanese food at low prices might consider sitting at the sidewalk counter at ShangChu (or inside the
air-conditioned restaurant). The food is tasty, fresh and stylishly prepared by a Taiwanese chef. A plate of six "nigiri sushi" pieces costs just NT$120, with a side order of tofu or potato salad going for NT$50. Wash it down with cold Taiwan Beer, and the entire meal will cost you not much more than NT$210. It's filling, delicious and inexpensive. If you prefer a plate of sashimi instead of nigiri sushi, the price is the same. Located not far from the popular shopping street-cum-nightmarket of WenHua Road, ShangChu makes a good stop during a night out on the town.
