Tycoon:
The best Chinese food in town
By Magen Lin
Translated by Kevin Lax
In
snack-famous Tainan, the old capital of Taiwan, Tycoon has won a
reputation for good food in a high-class setting.
On
your first visit, your attention is sure to be captured by the traditional
Chinese decor. You could be mistaken for thinking you are in an
emperor's palace.
Tycoon
Restaurant, which opened 15 years ago, provides a classical
setting in which people can enjoy top quality Chinese food.
At present, it specializes in Cantonese and Hunanese food.
Amongst
the various house specials are Hibiscus Aloe Thick Soup, Prawn
Salad (a four-person helping costs NT$420), Black Pepper Steak
(small portion NT$240), Banana Prawns (NT$160), Roast Shark's
Fin, Sea-flavor Papaya Boat, and Garlic Steamed Yudai. Also,
there are also the 'killer" house specials that require
advance ordering, like Special Ginseng Chicken (limited to
six orders per day), Peking Roast Duck, and "Rich"
Chicken.

The
restaurant thoughtfully provides differently-priced individual set
meals. Each dish is healthy and has special character. Prices range
from NT$580 to NT$2280, with the top of the range dish featuring
shark's fin, crab and abalone and other delicacies.
Between
7 pm and 9 pm, musicians dressed in traditional clothes perform.
There are several private boxes on the first floor; the second and
third floors can be used for weddings or parties. The restaurant
has its own free car park.
