Meals
on Wheels: ShiDou Mountain Restaurant & Coffee House
By Dan Bloom
|
Given
that the narrow-gauge railroad to Alishan is one of Chiayi¡¦s
most famous tourist attractions, creating a railway-themed restaurant
in the city makes a lot of sense. At the newly-opened ShiDou
Mountain Restaurant & Coffee House, the rail idea has been
taken beyond photographs and memorabilia. Actual train carriages,
resting on real tracks, serve as dining cars. This makes for
a novel eating experience--and the food¡¦s good, too. |
 |
The
cuisine is refined Taiwanese fare. Lunch and dinner specials featuring
pork, beef and fish cost between NT$180 and NT$250. The pastry section
is especially noteworthy, with more than 25 mouthwatering cakes,
pies, and custards (NT$80 to NT$120) on offer. The drinks list--teas,
coffees, and juices--has more than thirty selections, priced from
NT$70 to NT$140.
 |
The
two red dining cars which front DaYa Road are former Alishan
railway carriages that have been lovingly renovated. They¡¦re
comfortable, fitted with wide windows and a sound system,
and decorated with color snapshots from around the world.
There are also outdoor tables.
ShiDou
is suitable for couples, and office parties, and the owners
have put a lot of thought into making the place family-friendly.
There's a sandbox in the courtyard, with shovels and pails
for kids to play with, and crayons inside for children who
want to draw.
|
For
a refreshing and relaxing experience, not to mention urban "scenery"
with a difference, ShiDou certainly makes a change. This train may
not go anywhere, but it well worth taking!
