Formerly
on Shimen Road, this 50-year-old eatery recently moved to the ground
floor of a two-story Japanese colonial era merchant's house. The
furnishings, like the menu, reflect tradition rather than fashion.
Diners relax in air-conditioned interiors at rustic wooden tables,
or outside along busy Mintsu Road. House specials include: "Dan-tz
Noodles", invented in Tainan and featuring meat sauce with
garlic, soybean vinegar, bean sprouts and fresh coriander leaves,
and - at this eatery - a couple of shrimps; "Meinung
Ban-tiao", a similar concoction but with thicker noodles and
a leek sauce; and "Lu-wei" - a choice of meatballs, seafood
balls, ducks' heads, and tofu. Side orders include cabbage (NT$30),
fried vegetables (NT$30 to NT$50) and rice with meat sauce (NT$20).
All dishes are prepared without MSG. Food is delivered free of charge
for orders totaling NT$250 or more. By Steven Crook
