--By Dionysus, translated by Irene Chiang
La Gout is a bit like a fickle young
girl--a sweet and romantic afternoon tea cafe during
the day, and trendy, flashy-pink Technicolor dessert
shop at night. "La Gout", which alludes to
flavor and aroma in French, is a reference to the beautiful
French-Japanese style desserts spotlighted on the menu.
The main principle here is "Light & Delight",
and its desserts do taste delightful with seasonally-picked
fresh ingredients. For instance, the chef creates Apple
Souffles by hollowing out an apple, stuffing it with
egg white, fruit mash and apple wine, and baking it
at 200 C for 10 minutes, before serving it with custard
vanilla sauce. In addition, La Gout is the first dessert
shop to feature everything from traditional Chinese
medicine-type tea drawers to Western-style cocktail
performances. Other forms of fun include unique "tea
picking" at the Tea Bar and choosing an appropriate
dessert to go with selections, or trying a dessert wine
combination during the evening Lounge Time. This may
include a plate of magical chocolate made by Valrhona
Chocolate with a mirrored chocolate coating, accompanied
with sweet and sour orange sauce. The layers of bitter
and sweet flavors go perfectly with an aromatic Hardys
Premium Shiraz Cabernet. A pleasant raspberry cheese
with a sweet white wine from Bordeaux also makes a delightful
treat. Dessert prices range from NT$120 to NT$150; wine
by the glass starts from NT$150.
