A
close friend invited me to celebrate the Moon Festival
with four generations of her family at the BayPhoneTown
restaurant in Taipei's Living Mall. The establishment
specialises in Cantonese food and childhood memories
come flooding back with every mouthful. But this is
not your neighbourhood takeaway. BayPhoneTown is distinctly
upscale by comparison and the dishes are prepared with
a finesse and expertise rare in local restaurants. Although
we ate from a set menu prepared for the Full Moon Holiday,
the dishes can also be ordered a la carte. Highly recommended
are the House Special Fried Crab with Chopped Chilli
and Garlic accompanied by Cantonese-style soft rice,
and the Garoupa with Sugar Snap Peas in Salt Egg Sauce.
For lunch, it would be hard to go wrong with the Cantonese
Fried Noodles with Seafood and Garden Greens. Manager
Vicky is happy to arrange one of the special functions
rooms should you need one. --By Tracy Perkins, translated
