A childhood dream come true

Rating: PG Action/Adventure/Family

Growing up, almost every little boy has the same dream--driving a race car while the wind rips through his hair. The need for speed is rarely completely eradicated as children grow up, leaving generations of young and middle-aged men still clinging to that king-of-the-road fantasy, inspiring road rage on the highway, and Hollywood action-thrillers.

If you're one of these closet speed freaks, then look for "Speed Racer," an exciting family film based on a Japanese cartoon called “Mach, Go! Go! Go!” Directed by the Wachowski brothers, "Speed Racer" is full of the cutting-edge cinematography and innovative camera work that have made the duo famous. The race tracks go beyond the usual flat ovals with hordes of hurtling cars that have the audience moving their heads from right to left and back again; the directors have thrown in 3D racing tracks that make the runs look like roller coasters that reach 650km/hour.

While at this speed, the racers must drift, slide, attack and avoid being attacked by their opponents. Most of the racers' "tricks" are associated with minions of dashboard buttons. Of course, the racers also joke around with their teammates to keep up moral and boost their friendships. Perhaps one of the most enticing elements of the movie for Asian audiences is the inclusion of a shirtless, muscle-laden Rain, the famous Korean singer. Although "Speed Racer" is bit over the top, it's but still a good show and is sure to help appease that itch for speed that you just can't scratch enough.
