The young, beautiful shepherd, Astree, believes her fiance, Celadon, betrayed her and is unfaithful to her. After Astree tells him to leave for good, Celadon spirals into utter desperation and tries to drown himself in a roaring river. Although he swears never to see Astree again, he cannot fight his heart's desires. The question is, can he still be a part of her life without breaking his promise?

Set in 1950s to 1970s China, this film shares four interconnected stories. Shifting between a Yunnan village, a campus, and the Gobi Desert, each part of the story has an independent theme. Yet, they all affect each other in one way or another.

In a Sicilian village in 1913, a family living quietly on a farm is interrupted by an American man with gold teeth. He seduces the family with photos of a "New World" and stories of a better life, and persuades them to follow him into a magical wonderland.

Derived mainly from Scandinavian history, a folk tale and mythology, Beowulf is a story from the age of heroes. After destroying the overpowering demon Grendel, Beowulf incurs the undying wrath of the beast's seductive mother, who will use any means possible to ensure revenge.
