This story is about the conflicts and conspiracies between the emperor (Chow Yun-fat), the queen (Gong Li) and three princes in the Tang Dynasty. Chow divorced his wife and married Gong to become the emperor. However, the queen prefers her own son (Jay Chou) to be the successor instead of Chow's own son. As a result, the queen and the son are planning to overthrow the emperor. In the end, the queen's son stages a coup, with the Gold Flower as the sign to launch the rebellion.
