At first sight, you may wonder why is
this elegant, unique-looking cafe/restaurant, which
looks a bit like a yuppie residence, has been given
the name of a garden. As it turns out, Le Jardin de
Sens was originally a garden shop, with an owner that
was passionate about studying and promoting of the use
of herbs. Today, another of his dreams has come true,
although he continues to use the name Le Jardin de Sens
and insists on not using dried herbs.
Walk inside and you will sense the
relaxing comfort of this place. The understated but
tasteful interior decor is of the sort not often seen
in Taichung. Every cup of coffee and every piece of
cake here is a work of art. Small details, like the
water served at your table, are made more interesting
by the freshly picked rosemary or peppermint that is
added to your complimentary jug of drinking water.
Worth recommending are their freshly-made
cakes. The Tiramisu is made with double the normal quantity
of ingredients; the Fig Cake has authentic home-cooked
flavors; the Orange Cake is refreshingly tasty; the
Chocolate Cake is rich and makes for a perfect combination
with the delicious Illy-brand coffee that is served
here.
The Italian Meat Sauce Spaghetti is
worth noting, too. The rich flavors of herbs are paired
with meat carefully minced by hand. One can easily taste
the difference between this and what is served at most
ordinary pasta restaurants. The owner recommends the
cheapest but best item on the menu, the Olive Oil Garlic
and Hot Pepper Pasta, which allows you to savor the
original flavors of the pasta and pure olive oil.
Le Jardin des Sens is located right
next door to the Strauss furniture store and the WenXin
South Road Starbucks. Drinks are priced between NT$80
and NT$160, while meals are between NT$150 and NT$250.
Breakfast is also served on weekends.
