The
National Taiwan Craft Research Institute:
Raising Awareness of the Beauty of Taiwan's Crafts
by Rachel Chiou
|
Taiwan
has a rich history of unique crafts. But, when I
say 'crafts', it is probably traditional handicrafts
that come to mind. After a walk through the National
Taiwan Craft Research Institute, you will discover
that crafts are not only made by hand using traditional
methods, but are also made using machines or specialized
equipment. The National Taiwan Craft Research Institute
is located in Tsaotun Township on the way to Puli,
Sun Moon Lake, Hsitou and Chunghsing New Village.
|
|
This is a worthwhile stopping point
on your way to any of the above places as it will
only take an hour or so to go through all of the exhibit
areas, and many of the crafts on display are not easily
found elsewhere. There are three levels of exhibit
areas each with a different theme, but you will most
likely see a variety of crafts made from bamboo, wood,
pottery, glass, precious stone, metals and dyed cloth.
The beauty of Taiwan¡¼) "¦¼)"s crafts is evident in
the displays, but there is also something else, a
mix of modern technology and innovation.
|
 |
 |
In addition to organizing exhibits,
this institute is involved in the research and promotion
of Taiwan¡¼) "¦¼)"s crafts. Following the 921 earthquake
nearly two years ago, this institute has been providing
crafts training to residents of the hardest hit areas
to provide them with new skills, allowing them to
earn an income during the difficult time of rebuilding.
The National Taiwan Craft Research Institute holds
various domestic and international exhibitions in
its facility in Tsaotun, as well as in other cities
around Taiwan. For example the institute¡¼) "¦¼)"s
9th Annual Taiwan Crafts Exhibition, subtitled 'The
Dreams of Crafters', will be held June 28th
to July 4th at the Tainan Mitsukoshi Department Store.
|
The purpose of this exhibition
is to encourage amateur and professional craftspeople to
create pieces that are both functional and beautiful. It
is hoped that visitors to this exhibition will be impressed
with the contemporariness, creativity and aesthetic beauty
of Taiwan¡¼) "¦¼)"s crafts.
